Minnesota pre-K, K-12 educators respond to survey about distance learning during COVID
A new, statewide examination from the University of Minnesota shows primary and secondary educators are concerned about continuing distance learning in the fall and students’ access to technology. However, they also expressed worry about the feasibility or safety of returning to in-person learning amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Survey results represent more than 13,000 educators from 409 school districts and charter schools.
HIV research seeks answers for patients with impaired cognitive function
HIV continues to infect about 1.7 million people annually. Though the virus can be treated with antiretroviral drugs to prevent AIDS, many still suffer from side effects of unknown origin, including impaired cognitive function. Stanley Thayer, Department of Pharmacology, helped narrow in on a potential drug target that rescues synaptic connections and restores cognitive function in patients with HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders.
Teaching medical students how to combat misinformation on social media
To mask or not to mask? The act of protection, now the center of a political debate, is one of many topics currently clouded by misinformation amid the COVID-19 pandemic. To combat these falsehoods, a new virtual course at the University of Minnesota Medical School trains medical students to recognize and amplify reliable public health messaging and engage in respectful and informed medical discourse on social media.

Raptor Lab is an online learning environment focused on providing students with an authentic learning experience in science and environmental education. Psychology assistant professor Mallory McCord’s latest paper, published in ScienceDirect, suggests that biases against introverts at work “occur at a rate that merits further discussion.” She notes that this may be due, in part, to a culture in America that tends to reward outgoing, extroverted individuals. She hopes through her research to dispel stereotypes that may keep people who are more introverted from fully succeeding in the workplace.

When Star Trek meets Lake Street
College of Science and Engineering junior David Ha is bringing his love of puzzle hunts to the public with a new Star Trek-themed game called The Final Frontier. Ha, a computer science major, created the intro-level puzzle hunt—similar to a virtual escape room—over the course of a month. The official hunt ran from June 6-14, but The Final Frontier is still available for playing. So far, more than 150 puzzles have been solved and Ha has raised more than $1,200 to benefit the We Love Lake Street Recovery Fund.

Excess sugar linked to dangerous heart and abdominal fat
Eating too much sugar is associated with larger fat deposits around the heart and in the abdomen, which are risky for health. That’s the finding from a new School of Public Health study recently published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology. The study, led by PhD student So Yun Yi and co-authored by Associate Professor Lyn Steffen, found that sugar intake over a 20-year period was related to the existence of fat volumes around the heart and abdomen later in life.
